    First Sundays... blow your mind!
I have to share it with those that check in...
On the first Sunday of each month at the Baked Potato right next to Universal Studio (on Cahuenga) the band
SHOGUN WARRIOR plays the most fantastic foot stomping, body twitching, head nodding jazz improvisation freestyle set that I have ever witnessed. Jeff Babko who plays on Jimmy Kimmel Live is the guy behind the keys who drives the show. They have other more permanent members, but the group does rotate. Mike Alizondo (Dr. Dre & Fiona Apple's latest) is on Bass... their drummer is incredible and their trumpet player is all over the place excellent.
For those who want to know what they're missing, I snapped a few movies last night, they take a while to download, but are well worth it. If anyone else wants to go, give a shout or show up. Sushi Dan's before the show and two drink minimum at the show.
Here is the band covering "Black Satin" from the wild Miles Davis album on the Corner:

Two other clips, a bit longer:
    http://www.formikafilms.com/download/photos/Baked/Baked_One.avi

I am going to start recording the shows and I will post the files that I put together.

    enjoy.

    airbag...

    In the next world war
    in a jack knifed juggernaut,
    I am born again.

    In the neon sign,
    scrolling up and down,
    I am born again.

    In an interstellar burst,
I am back to save the universe.

    In a deep deep sleep,
    of the innocent,
    I am born again.

    In a fast German car,
    I'm amazed that I survived,
    an airbag saved my life.

    In an interstellar burst,
I am back to save the universe.

    In an interstellar burst,
I am back to save the universe.

    In an interstellar burst,
I am back to save the universe.

    Finally some new work. Ahhh.
After putting aside the book writing, post production and technical things, I put together and directed a music video shoot last weekend for my friend John Gold. It was a small tiny shoot in a tiny apartment (john's), but it felt great to be around motivated folks who gave their time for the sake of creating something new. These are the rough sketches for the video. It was a technical shoot, shot in HD with the camera turned vertical to multiply john as he plays the various instruments in the song. It was important to do something fresh, so we actually re-recorded the song by recording each of the instruments live during the shooting of the "slices." Hope ya dig it and I will post the finished version when I am done. The song is called Cactusflower from the Eastside Shake album.
The Image is pretty HUGE cause we shot in HD.

    Lbs Post Day 1
I am in New York right now. I flew in last night and touched down at JFK around 11pm. The flight wasn't bad at all, but I really can't control my brain activity in which I see the plane exploding mid-air or just falling from the sky. As Barry Sonnenfeld would say, "one more failed suicide attempt."
I stayed in Brooklyn at my friend Natalie's apartment and drove into the city to stay for the next few days at my friend Danny's apartment on the corner of West 4th and Perry.

At home, just sitting here watching the lesions dry...
it ain't no joke to get the chicken pox when you are 31.
My flight home was pure agony. I should not have been on it, but the french doctor said it was a mild case and that it was fine to fly.
The ER doctor I saw saturday night, said it wasn't mild! The doctor I saw yesterday said, This is not a mild case!
The weekend was horrible, but I am feeling better today. I had lilly take some pics and I'll post em, if they don't scare people. I will have some time to scan some old skate pics and post a bit cause I have to just chill out and let all my sores dry out.
Deadwood is done. Arrested Development is done. Been watching all the new Seinfeld season DVDs and sometimes when I laugh incredibly hard I feel my blood pushing each of the bumps...
ANy recommendations for home Chicken Pox entertainment?? and keep in mind I have them ALL OVER!

Friday the 20th - drum roll...... CHICKEN POX!!!
So, I went to the doctor this morning as I thought I was feeling better, but I woke up with cold sweats and I had these weird bumps on my head and some bumps on my tongue that I noticed yesterday. THe doctor looked me over and asked me if I ever had the chicken pox... NOPE. Well, I do now. Fortunately, I think as healthy as I am and because I am taking the juice plus it is a medium sized case, not too itchy (yet), but definitely it's on me. I really can't quite believe it. The odds are that I picked it up within the last 2 weeks and it sneaked out on Tuesday afternoon. It makes perfect sense with how I have been feeling, aching, sweating, fevering... anyway, I am pretty bummed because I can't really take anything for it, I just have to wait it out. no more updates cause I can't be bothered. I will post the pics once I get home, plus my wireless card is acting up.
Thanks for the good wishes that are to come.
    I'll be stateside Saturday afternoon.

Tuesday the 17th - A day to remember
11 years ago my mentor Mike Ternasky passed away on May 17th, so every year I make an effort to especially remember him and what he gave to me and how far I have come in that same time. Nathalie lost her mom on March 17th, so the day the 17th has a meaning for both of us. Nathalie's mother is buried here in Cannes. Seeing that we are both here on the 17th, I got to take a chunk of time off from Adobe in the middle of the day and take a special trip to the cemetary. Nathalie aunt, Ellen and uncle, Maurice live here in Cannes so she has family here that she stays with. I consider Ellen my French Grandmother because she is very caring with me.

Most days Ellen goes to the market to buy food for dinner. I met up with them at the Market.

Monday the 16th - aka My fucking Shoulder is sore!
Pardon the swears up front, but I woke up monday unable to move my right arm. If it's not enough that I tore a muscle in my chest in Coachella, just as that heals, I sleep wrong on my inherently WRONG french bed and now I am paying a big price, thus there aren's so many photos.

Sunday the 15th - AKA Amy's Almost best meal EVER
It's monday morning. Amy is on her way to the airport and I am in the american pavilion. I must have slept wrong because my shoulder and neck is completely stiff. I can barely twist my head or look down. It's overcast and that sums it up. I am chairing a panel at 1:30 or 13:30 if that's your choice.
Yesterday was gorgeous. Perfect weather and all, the Star Wars premiere was a big hit around the town and I got bed sober and at a reasonable hour. Amy started the day with a rasberry pastry that knocked her socks off.

Saturday the 14th - AKA French Doormen, Player Hate on Cat Power T-Shirt!!!
It's sunday now and I am in the american pavilion. Went to bed at 4am, woke up around 9, then went back to sleep and woke up at 10am by a lovely phone call. Best way to start the day.
Yesterday was a good day, so on the posting. This first shot is what Amy and I saw on the way to the Croisette in the morning. I snapped the pic as a cyclist went through the frame...

    CANNES - Friday the 13th - YIKES.
So right now I am sitting in the american pavillion and I cannot believe that I have kicked jet lag for the umpteenth time. I don't know whay, but I am not phased by the travel times. Thank god for business class!
Onwards... here the skinny on my day that started Thursday from LAX - AMerican flight to Heathrow (11 hours) and then a 2 hour flight to Nice from Heathrow. My friend Amy (she's pretty much my younger sister) is also here from Italy where she is studying a semester abroad in Perugia. I love the mediteranean sea.

Behind the Video - Virtual Reality Notebook

In the early 90s I co-edited and co-directed and shot a good portion of one of my favorite skate videos with my mentor Mike Ternasky. It was called Virtual Reality and it was for the company Plan B. I dug up my notebook from the post of the video and wanted to share it. If you have seen the video you know about the triple screen opening sequence in which three different areas of the frame show different skate clips. We wanted to synchronize the clips so certain spots would appear at the same time. In order to do that because the video was edited on linear 3/4" decks, we had to time the entire sequence out before editing it. That stuff and other cool notes are included.

Portraits - Skate Icons, Low Lifes and family
As I have been going through my pics, I found a number of cool portraits or candid head shots, most taken by myself, but some acquired over time. Here's a collection of them.

Mystery Roll 11 - Gnarly Mini Ramp Rippers full on GnaRLy.
So this is one of the most time worn rolls that I developed. It's pretty cool to see the slow destruction of the color information and to see where and how it fades... Here are some Hard Core Palo Alto locals shredding up their mini ramp on Marsh Road by 101. CHudu was at this session, but I only one pic of him here... enjoy it's totall G-Narly!

Mystery Roll 10 - First EVER??? Jump Ramp & Page Mill
This roll was in my mystery rolls and it could be pretty unique as I think it could be the first roll I ever shot where I consciously went to a session to take pictures with a more sophisticated camera. Of course I have older shots of myself, but these are with the lens outward and because the shutter is off, I am certain I am using a manual camera which would mean I was using my dads camera, which would be a first time type of thing. Context is everything? RIght? Hopefully that's right. ANyway, these are by far the worst pictures I have taken, but fuck it. Check it.

San Jose Trip - AKA - So Good - AKA - Stunts - AKA - Unleash the Hounds!
In an effort to further exploit my ridiculous travel schedule I am trying to journal my trips as best I can. I will still post my skate pics, but they will be mixed with travel during the month of march.
Yesterday, I met up with Dana and Scotty to travel up north to San Jose for conference we were going to speak at, at the Adobe Systems headquarters ... the following is a short recounting of the wonderful trip...

Here's Brown of BronWa fame, fortune and Glory... Dude! We piled into Scotty's car and left from Burbank...
